WIPO Highlights the Importance of Collective Management in Supporting the Global Creative Economy
During its recent General Assemblies in Geneva, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reaffirmed that Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) play a vital role in strengthening the global creative economy. By providing efficient collective licensing systems, CMOs enable the lawful use of copyrighted works while ensuring that authors, publishers, and other rightsholders receive fair and transparent remuneration for the use of their creations.
WIPO emphasized that collective management has become an essential component of a sustainable copyright ecosystem, supporting cultural and creative industries while encouraging continued investment in knowledge, innovation, and artistic expression. The organization noted that effective licensing frameworks help balance access to creative content with the protection of intellectual property rights.
The organization also highlighted that modernizing the digital infrastructure of collective management is now a global priority, driven by the rapid growth of digital content and the increasing use of artificial intelligence technologies. WIPO called for greater investment in digital solutions, improved rights management databases, and stronger international cooperation among collective management organizations to enhance efficiency, transparency, and cross-border copyright administration.
WIPO concluded that collective management remains one of the most effective mechanisms for promoting creativity, protecting rightsholders, and supporting the long-term growth of the global creative economy in an increasingly digital world.
